Today, let’s talk about the mechanical seal of the generator sealing oil screw pump HSNH280-43, which is a key role in the power plant. But even the best things have problems. The most common problem of mechanical seals during operation is seal failure. So what are its failure modes? Let’s take a look and provide some solutions.
The most common failure mode is seal surface wear. The sealing surface is the core of the mechanical seal and is responsible for preventing medium leakage. But over time, or if there are impurities in the medium, the sealing surface will wear, resulting in a decrease in sealing performance. Check the sealing surface regularly and replace it in time if it is worn. Don’t wait until the leakage is serious before you regret it.
Sometimes, pump shaft eccentricity can also cause mechanical seal failure. Pump shaft eccentricity means that the center lines of the pump shaft and the motor shaft are not aligned, which will cause uneven force on the mechanical seal, accelerate the wear of the sealing surface, and even directly damage it. Regularly check the alignment of the pump shaft and the motor shaft to keep them coaxial to ensure the life of the mechanical seal.
Abnormal seal chamber pressure is also a big problem. If the pressure in the seal chamber is too high or too low, it will affect the normal operation of the mechanical seal. If the pressure is too high, the sealing surface is easy to be cracked; if the pressure is too low, the sealing surface cannot form an effective seal. Check the pressure of the sealing chamber to ensure that it is within the design range. Don’t let pressure become the enemy of mechanical seals.
Sometimes, the sealing medium itself is corrosive and will corrode the sealing material, causing the seal to fail. Especially for those acidic, alkaline or organic solvent-containing media, you must be extra careful. Choose the right sealing material, check the corrosion of the sealing material regularly, and replace it when necessary to ensure the reliability of the seal.
Mechanical seals are usually equipped with a set of auxiliary systems, such as flushing, cooling and lubrication systems, which can help extend the life of the seal. However, if these auxiliary systems fail, such as insufficient cooling water supply, contaminated flushing fluid, and poor lubrication, they will accelerate the damage of the mechanical seal. Check the working status of the auxiliary systems regularly to ensure that they are operating normally, and don’t let the assistants become troublemakers.
When encountering these failure modes, don’t panic, you must calmly analyze and find out the root cause. Regular maintenance and regular inspections are the best way to prevent failure. Selecting the right sealing material, ensuring the pump shaft is aligned, monitoring the seal chamber pressure, paying attention to the properties of the medium, and checking the auxiliary system are all tasks that maintenance personnel have to do on a daily basis. Find problems and deal with them in a timely manner, and don’t let small problems turn into big disasters.
