Steam Seal Ring Health Monitoring for Steam Turbine N125-13.24/535/535

In the daily operation of the steam turbine, in addition to regular inspections of wear and maintenance, there are also some monitoring indicators that can help us warn of potential failures of the steam seal ring in advance, thereby effectively preventing unexpected shutdowns. By continuously monitoring these indicators, the stable operation of the steam turbine can be ensured, and timely measures can be taken to avoid unnecessary economic losses. The following will introduce these key monitoring indicators and their significance in detail.

During the operation of the steam turbine, the steam seal ring, as part of the high-pressure end shaft seal, is directly related to the overall operating efficiency and safety of the steam turbine. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor and analyze the following data in real time:

First, temperature monitoring. The working environment of the steam seal ring is extremely harsh, and it is often in a state of high temperature and high-speed rotation. If the seal ring is overheated, it may cause deformation or damage to the material, thereby affecting the sealing performance. Therefore, by installing a temperature sensor to monitor the temperature near the steam seal ring in real time, abnormal temperature rise can be detected in time, thereby prompting the operator to take corresponding cooling measures or adjust the operating parameters to avoid damage to the seal ring caused by excessive temperature.

Secondly, vibration analysis. The steam turbine will generate certain vibrations during operation, and wear or damage to the steam seal ring often leads to changes in vibration patterns. By installing vibration monitoring equipment, these subtle changes can be captured and potential problems can be identified through data analysis. For example, if an increase in vibration at a specific frequency is detected, it may be caused by an increase in the gap between the seal ring and the rotor or poor contact. In this case, the problem can be solved by adjusting the seal gap or replacing the damaged seal.

In addition, pressure monitoring. One of the main functions of the steam seal ring is to prevent steam leakage. The working status of the seal ring can be judged by monitoring the pressure changes at the front end of the high-pressure cylinder. If the pressure at the front end of the high-pressure cylinder drops abnormally, it may mean that there is a leakage problem with the seal ring. At the same time, the steam pressure entering the bearing box can also be monitored, because once there is a problem with the seal ring, excessive steam leakage may cause the internal pressure of the bearing box to increase, which in turn affects the performance of the lubricating oil.

In addition, flow monitoring. By monitoring the steam flow through the steam seal ring, the working condition of the seal ring can also be indirectly judged. Under normal circumstances, the steam flow through the seal ring should be stable. If the flow rate suddenly increases, it may indicate that the sealing performance of the seal ring has decreased, and further inspection is required for damage or other problems.

In addition, sound monitoring. Although not as intuitive as the above methods, some potential problems can also be discovered through sound monitoring. For example, abnormal sounds or noises may indicate that there is abnormal contact between the seal ring and the rotor, or that the seal ring itself is worn or damaged. Using advanced acoustic monitoring technology, these problems can be identified at an early stage to avoid larger failures.

By combining the above methods, the working status of the steam seal ring can be effectively monitored, potential problems can be discovered and handled in a timely manner, and the stable operation of the steam turbine can be ensured. It can also significantly reduce operating costs and extend the service life of equipment, which is an important measure to ensure the long-term stable operation of the steam turbine.
